The Bedford Exchange Building

Turning the clock back to 1891, the New York and New Jersey Telephone Company started building two interconnected edifices in 601-619 Throop.

The New York and New Jersey Telephone Exchange

Built in 1905 and progressively unified by 1913, the two buildings boast ample light and an impressive presence inspired by the Italian Renaissance Revival architectural style.

1938

Warehouses and social service buildings

After 1938, the two buildings would remain warehouses and later serve the local community as social service and healthcare spaces.

Landmarked

The building’s rich history led to being recognized as a Landmark as part of the Stuyvesant Heights HD in 1971.

Today, the building breathes new life into the neighborhood as it’s reconstructed to serve as a multi-family residential building while maintaining its historical identity.
